Internationalization
as a strategic concept in higher education is rather new. In Europe, Northern
America and Australia it developed in the late 1980s and is still in
development in emerging and developing countries. At the same time, the concept
has evolved into a rather broad one with all kind of different components, choices
and directions, even sometimes conflicting ones. How has internationalization
evolved, what do we mean with internationalization, which rationales are
driving the agenda, what different choices and directions we see, both in the
component of internationalization abroad (mobility of people and programs) and
at home (curriculum, teaching and learning, learning outcomes). Why do we have
to rethink the current direction of internationalization in higher education
and what elements will define the new phase of it, in particular in emerging
and developing countries? The workshop will address these questions with
specific focus on the at home component of internationalization.
