The Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão (IFMA) was created by law 11,892, December 29, 2008 from the integration of the Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica do Maranhão (CEFET-MA) and Federal Agro-Technical School of Codó, Maranhão and São Raimundo Mangabeiras. IFMA’s institutional mission is to promote professional education in science and technology, through the integration of teaching, research and extension, with a focus on the formation of the citizen and in the sustainable socioeconomic development. Currently, the IFMA has 26 campuses (three in the implementation phase), three advanced centers, three campuses and a Technological Vocation Center (in the implementation phase) spread across all regions of the State of Maranhão. The institution offers courses in basic level, technical, undergraduate and graduate degrees to youth and adults. The Institute has more than 70 research groups divided into seven major areas of knowledge, in addition to developing extension actions in the areas of education, leisure, culture, human rights, health, labour and employability. IFMA also takes action in Distant Learning, through 29 poles of presential support located in the capital, São Luís and in the continent of the state of Maranhão.
The Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) is a Brazilian public higher education institution created in 1966 and maintained by the Federal Government of Brazil (linked to the Ministry of Education). It is one of the largest federal universities in the country and one of the Brazilian centers of excellence in teaching and research. The University has several campuses (nine in total) throughout the state, including one in the city of São Luís (central campus) and in the cities of Bacabal, Balsas, Chapadinha, Codó, Grajaú, Imperatriz, Pinheiro and São Bernardo. The Institucion houses the best medical, law and pedagogy courses in the State (according to the ranking of the National Student Performance Exam). The Federal University of Maranhão shows leadership in research, with 76% of research projects approved by The Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Currently there are a total of 30.981 students, 1.764 professors and 1.733 technical and administrative staff.
